1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The song that we have chosen to produce our music video is: We No Speak Americano sang by Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP. The main reasons we had for choosing this song are that we found the video had been created in an interesting way with retro style effects and it contained different things compared to other videos such as a comedy chase scene. We analysed the video and began to understand how it was completely different from other music videos as it didn't contain people singing and dancing as they normally do. Instead it contained a chase scene involving a confused thief and a police officer! This video was very intriguing as it brought different concepts to traditional types of music videos. This made us think hard about how we would create our own music video with a good comparison to the original.

The first sequence of the video was inspired by the official video and so we matched the beat of the song to the beginning of our footage. To make it visually interesting, we had a nice Mercedes Benz and we all dressed very smartly to give an unusual effect. After the first chase scene when we all ran indoors, we added a ripple effect to represent a change in surroundings. We took this shot on a sunny day so we had no problems except for the fact it was windy!

We filmed in many areas such as Manchester Arndale car park (top floor). At this location, we hired a Mercedes Benz to create a high-class video as music videos don't contain scenes with people coming out of cheap cars! The beginning of the video was created where the businessman parks his classy car and walks off and then the thief, who is very smartly dressed and hidden, sneaks up to the car and breaks into it, is caught almost instantly as the businessman comes back looking for his phone. We decided to dress up smartly as the businessman should look professional and the thief was intended to look as though he was a petty criminal but also involved in organised crime!

When the thief is noticed, it results in a little fight between the businessman and the thief, and the thief ends up being chased by the businessman. As the businessman catches up to the thief after a little run around the car park, he punches him and this is where a security guard sees violence so the security guard ends up chasing the business man! This consisted of us running across the car park as the thief was looking for a way to escape which were the doors we all entered. We also added a ripple effect here to give the a good effect showing that we had entered a different place which is why the next scene showed us looking around as though we didn't know how we got there but the chase scene carried on.

The next scene was the chase scene being continued but a bit of comedy being added to it at the same time! as we ran down the slope we created a 3-way split screen of the thief, businessman and security guard doing a funny little dance to add a humorous effect. We also added colours and effects to these different screens. We got the idea of a coloured effect from the music video of 'The Prodigy - Out of space' as it contained unusual colours and they made the video stand out more. This leads onto another funny scene of us three in a row following each other in a forward & reverse effect!

The chase scene consists of other various effects such as a 2-way split screen of us three men running on the stairs, on one side is us running forwards and on the other side is us running backwards.

We also tried creating a reflective image of ourselves onto the canal river as we ran across the bridge to create a unique scene which hasn't been shown in any music videos we have come across.

In the Museum of Science & Industry, we added a black & white effect to give the feeling of an olden age and had a close-up shot of the thief's eyes. It could have been more effective if the close-up shot showed the eyes blinking or in colour.

The random change of location was done throughout the video in many different locations such as areas in castlefield and in the Museum of Science & Industry where we also added a little comedy such as crazy dancing and silly acting throughout the video to create a humourous effect. In the video, the scene in the Museum of Science & Industry is when the businessman explains to the security guard that its actually a thief he is after to get his stuff back so then both the businessman and security guard start chasing after the thief! The video finally ends in a tunnel under a bridge where the thief is finally arrested and the businessman gets his belongings back but the thief turns around, hits the security guard and runs off again!

The video has many similarities to the official video such as the chase scene and the use of signs, they are also very different. The official video is all filmed in black and white to give it that very retro italian look, where as ours is filmed in a variety of colours such as sepia black and white and parts where a rainbow of colours are used. We chose the montage of d
ifferent colours as we liked its similarities to the video Out of Space by The Prodigy. Another way that our music video differs from the original is that in the official video it is very clear as to what is happening in regards to the scene where as ours has all the effects and changes in time to confuse the audience in to wondering what is happening.

2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts

As we can see this video is post imperial and a spoof as it tries to focus its main characteristic as comic. To help create the effect of an old generation the scene are set in an old shanty town with a black shade effect around the edges of the video, also the use of curvy and swirly text throughout the video helps to add to this effect. The video is mainly choreography based so by using unusual actions in time with the beat of the song it helps create a comic effect to the video also to help to this effect is the simple love story that runs throughout (man sees girl, falls in love, try's to impress her, gets into trouble, runs around, meet again and live happily ever after). in the middle of this video the main character becomes exposed to misunderstanding which gets him in trouble with the law and is chased by the police officer. which in event is comic to us as we seen something that the character didn't. AS the strange turn of event unfold he eventually gets what he wants and lives happily ever after, or so he thought as he finds out her cooking is awful. the main use of the camera is medium shots and long shots as this enables us to focus on the choreography of the characters as they run about the scene and creates more humor. comparison of original video and our video

we have tried to loosely base our video around the original as our similarities very from the chasing action scene to the minute theme of crime as the black & white theme is consistent through the original video our changes to three different settings and filled with different types of filters and effects, whilst keeping with the original chase scene style we decided that we wanted to make our video more visually interesting and creating my changing the looks of things slowing down or speeding up the clips and adding overlays of Sean with a papa americano sign (keeping with the tradition of the official video). We also has small parts there the clip ran forward then reversed several times in time with the music to give a comical effect and had colours changing in time to actions that the characters were creating. Where this video however is nothing like whet you would normally find as a swing house music video it does have a lot of similar characteristics such as the random almost meaningless video that leaves the viewer wondering what it had to do with anything and also it is similar to the prodigy out of space music video which is dance/electronic music as it is also random and uses various coloured effects.

3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The audience had many comments which were both positive and negative.
Positive comments included good use of colour and editing effects such as the three way split screen scene where a variety of colours were used to emphasize on each individual person. Also, the ripple effect which merged the first scene to the second scene received positive comments as it created the confusing effect we wanted which helped us to change location smoothly in an effective way.
There were many other generally good comments to the effects used when we changed scenes and the angle shots that were taken were noted to be good and useful.

The audience also had negative comments. Among these was that no cartoonistic sounds were used to create more of a comedy video. Also, advice was given to add speech bubbles with words like 'pow!' or 'boom!' to help give more of an impact! Other comments were that the beginning scene of the music video was simple and should have had more effects or jump cuts.

We changed many different effects and managed to synchronise the time of the effects with the sounds of the beat in the song. We also added more coloured effects and differents kinds of effects such as backwards and forwards repeated motion. We also displayed a picture of No Americano cup of coffee to show a comparison of a name off a starbucks menu compared to a music video!

Angles main comments were not enough different camera angles, and more would have made the video more interesting and professional looking.

locations There were some good comments on the location from people saying that our chosen locations such as Castlefield and the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry were good choices for the times that the different scenes were set in.
lighting

Mise en scene! the overall comments where that sometimes lighting was a off and that there was no added on sound effects, but also it was commented that our costumes never changed, then we pointed out that we had not changed character wise but the scene has, from this it leads me to believe that we should have made that clearer at the start of the video.

4 How did you use media technologies in the construction planning and research and evaluation stages?

How did you use media technologies in the construction planning and research and evaluation stages?

To plan our work we first went online to have a look at similar songs in our genre of music, which is swing house. We started by using You Tube and Muzu to research ant analyze the official We no speak Americano video by Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR8logunPzQ. The other songs that we looked at were Why don’t you by Gramophonedzie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT8OEtf5r1U, When I was drunk by Riva Starr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLdmoX8UsRA and other similar artists. once we had done this we started to plan the look that we wanted our video to have. We decided that we would do a montage style video and that lead us into looking at the video for The Prodigy's out of space on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qriH-8yeqcE. After we looked at the video we decided that we wanted it to be similar to the original by having a chase scene however we wanted elements from the prodigy video sugh as random colours and the black and white/ sepia from the Gramophonedzie video.

When planning our video we used Google Earth to see where there were potential zones for filming in Manchester were, this was particularly useful as we had to search for cobbled streets which would have been a lot harder to do on foot. Also any planning, which had been written or drawn on paper, has been scanned on to a computer so that all members could have a copy if it was necessary.

Although we have had the opportunity to use a Green Screen we decided against is as we felt that it was no applicable as all our filming was done on location. On one side it could have helped by adding to the effects that our video had, including interesting scenery it could however have been too much and made the video look over edited. Also even though our video had a lot editing that made it look digitally created, we wanted all of our original film to be taken on location without filters.

At the stage when they were constructing our video we used the industry standard software Final Cut Pro on an Apple iMac where we had the ability to take advatage of its numerous features. We used a lot the video filters for colour such as sepia and black and white, another way which we used Final Cut Pro to edit the video was to layer parts of the video on top of each other to create a ghostly like illusion. We used the razor tool to cut parts of film up so that they could be repeated several times over to the beat of the music.

CD cover analysis

This is an example of a swing music poster as you can see we have tried to en-corporate the black & white effect into our CD covers to show a representation of the old and also to help enforce part of our theme. With simple text that we can see we can also refers to the simple text that we have used as it makes it simple and easy for our audience to read and absorb the information.

As we can see this House music poster has used a simple bright colour to attract its audience so to respond to this we also used a simple yet colourful background for our poster to attract our audiences and make them interested in the product we are trying to sell. Also the bright neon colour is consstent in this poster so to addapt to that we also made parts of our poster contain colour within the black & white to make them stand out more.

This is Riva Starr he is another swing-house artist and as we can see from his album poster he has fused the young ( a baby ) with the old ( giving him a tash ) and this piece of work can relate closest to what we have hopefully accomplished throughout our three products the simple mix of the old and the new. As it creates a clear picture of being not only a unique selling point but a unique product that will appeal to more than just one generation.

Analysis and evaluation

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Throughout the project we have tried to keep the content in consistency with each other by maintaining relativeness in each piece i.e. the content will show a form of post imperial like the suits each character is wearing a suit (or so much of it) and this is in the video, poster and CD covers. As this is a reference to the 1940's and thus this makes our product appealing because it is different and in a modern society could easily be classed as abstract from the crowd. This can also link with the black & white theme in the video and in the CD covers as Can the colour for more modern days. We also have tried to keep the clash of modern culture and aged culture throughout the work we do as for example the car we used is a modern expensive car and this is used in all our products but it will clash with the black & white theme we have running through. But none more than a better representation of this is the song we used as it's genera is swing-house a mixture of old swing music with modern house music. Also by keeping consistence throughout the products our audiences wont be confused and put off because our products do not tend to change too much. This product thus has a unique selling point for our product as there are very few on the market like it and in the music industry uniqueness is an essential characteristic to become a big success. Due to other similar garner of products we would find this product most likely in a HMV store and the CD cover is the factor that would help this product stand out from the rest with its combination of contrast and simple text it would be easily noticed by consumers eye.

Poster Analysis

The first sequence of the video was inspired by the official video and so we matched the beat of the song to the beginning of our footage. To make it visually interesting, we had a nice Mercedes Benz and we all dressed very smartly to give an unusual effect. After the first chase scene when we all ran indoors, we added a ripple effect to represent a change in surroundings. We also tried creating a reflective image of ourselves onto the canal river as we ran across the bridge to create a unique scene which hasn't been shown clearly by others.

In the Museum of Science & Industry, we added a black & white effect to give the feeling of an olden age and had a close-up shot of the thief's eyes. It could have been more effective if the close-up shot showed the eyes blinking or in colour.

Our final scene ended with the three men running into subway and this is where the security guard manages to apprehend the thief and secure him with his hands but the thief manages to struggle himself free and ends up punching the security guard and making a run for it!

Our first location shot was at the top of Manchester Arndale car park and this consisted of us running across the car park and then looking for a way to escape which were the doors we all entered. We also added a ripple effect here to give the a good effect showing that we had entered a different place which is why the next scene showed us looking around as though we didn't know how we got there but the chase scene carried on. Then we added a little humour such as a 3 way split screen of all of us doing something funny while on the run! We then ran around a canal dock and right next to the canal. We then ran up and down some stairs which were put up as a splitcreen in the video to give a bizarre effect and then we ran across a bridge. After this scene we added another effect which blended into another scene which was the Museum of Science & Industry. We give this scene a black and white effect to give a more original, old aged image. Then we ran out of the Museum and used a cube effect to change to the final scene which was the tunnel under the bridge. This is where we walked fast and when we edited it, we increased the speed to try and synchronise it with the beat.

Our final scene ended with the three men running into subway and this is where the security guard manages to apprehend the thief and secure him with his hands but the thief manages to struggle himself free and ends up punching the security guard which was done in a blurry effect.

planning

We researched the song and its genre Swinghouse (Electronic/Dance) and found that the style of video is different to most of the industry, which makes it very interesting and unique. We also looked in to the props that we needed to produce this music video. To create a similar contrast to the original music video that had been produced we took many random shots to create a montage effect.
Our plan was to go out and take many different photographs of the area where we filmed and get various angles to decide which ways were most suitable to take shots from and also to get a good sense of perspective. We also browsed many different clothes shops to look for suitable clothing to create a modern version of the video and calculated how much it cost so we could record our budget.

We researched the genre Swinghouse on many different websites and analysed many of them from websites such as youtube.com, gosong.net & muzu.tv. We took particular notice to many sound effects that were used in the different videos and noticed a regular pattern which was intriguing.

We analysed other swinghouse genre videos and they were all very different from normal music videos and from each other!
One of the videos analysed was 'Riva Starr - When i was drunk' and this mainly about a baby drinking milk! It contained a few effects when the bottles of milk were flying in the air and when one of the bottles was going towards the baby's mouth. What also made this video different was that it contained a regular baby but with a prominent moustache!

Another video we analysed was very different too. It contained a regular room which was a complete mess with clothes and ornaments all over the place and a black & white television. The women from the television vanishes from the TV and ends up coming in from the front door and looks as though she's still in the TV as she is completely in black & white so she looks as though she had walked out of a an old TV! She simply cleans up the room by touching things and they shoot up into the correct place themselves! She also changes everything she touches to black & white too except the man who is staring at her in shock!
